This trip is not just a trek — it’s a mix of road journey, mountain walks, and peaceful stays in Sari Village. We start early from Delhi, drive along the holy Ganga, visit Maa Dhari Devi Temple and the Devprayag Sangam (where two rivers meet to form the Ganga), and slowly make our way to the hills.
The trek itself covers Tungnath Temple (the world’s highest Shiva temple) and Chandrashila Peak, where the Himalayan view literally takes your breath away. On the other side, Deoria Tal offers a quiet lakeside with reflections of snow peaks in the water. Nights are spent in local homestays or camps, with warm food and friendly hosts.

Destinations Covered
Chopta Valley – Meadows with Himalayan Backdrop
Chopta is a peaceful, green valley surrounded by tall pine, deodar, and rhododendron forests. In summer, the meadows turn bright green, and in winter, they wear a blanket of snow. Often called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand, Chopta offers clear views of peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. It’s the perfect base for short Himalayan treks and for enjoying the slow, fresh mountain life.
Tungnath Temple – Highest Shiva Temple in the World
At an altitude of about 3,680 meters, Tungnath is not just a trekking spot—it’s a place of deep peace and devotion. Believed to be over a thousand years old, this temple is part of the Panch Kedar and is said to have been built by the Pandavas. The stone structure stands strong against wind and snow, and reaching it is a beautiful walk through alpine meadows and fragrant forests.
Chandrashila Peak – 360° Himalayan Viewpoint
A short but steep climb from Tungnath takes you to Chandrashila, which means “Moon Rock.” From here, you can see a full 360° panorama of the Himalayas—snow-capped peaks in every direction, with the sun rising over them like a painting. On a clear day, you can spot Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Trishul, and Chaukhamba standing tall.
Deoria Tal – Mirror Lake of the Himalayas
Deoria Tal is a calm, high-altitude lake surrounded by forests. Its still water creates a perfect reflection of the snowy Chaukhamba peaks, especially in the early morning when the wind is quiet. Local legends say the Pandavas visited this lake during their exile. It’s a peaceful spot for photography, picnics, or just sitting and soaking in the view.
Omkareshwar Temple – Sacred Seat of the Deities in Ukhimath
Located in Ukhimath, this ancient temple is where the idols of Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar are brought during the winter months when the high-altitude temples are snowbound. The temple is beautifully simple, with intricate wooden carvings and a strong spiritual presence.
Maa Dhari Devi Temple – Goddess on the River
Standing on a rock in the middle of the Alaknanda River, this temple is dedicated to Maa Dhari Devi, believed to be the guardian goddess of Uttarakhand. The location itself is unique—you reach it via a small bridge, with river water rushing below. It’s a sacred and serene place, with a strong connection to local folklore.
Devprayag Sangam – Meeting Point of Two Holy Rivers
Devprayag is where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the sacred Ganga. The green-blue waters merge in a beautiful swirl that you can see clearly from above. This confluence is considered highly holy, and the town around it is filled with small temples, ghats, and peaceful riverbanks.
Essential Things to Carry for Deoria Tal–Chandrashila Trek
Packing smart is the key to enjoying this trek in comfort and safety. The weather in the Himalayas can change quickly, so whether you are coming in summer, autumn, or winter, here are the must-have items:
1. Trekking Shoes with Good Grip
This is the most important thing. Ordinary sports shoes won’t work here. You need sturdy trekking shoes with deep grip soles for both uphill climbs and downhill slopes.
In winter, choose waterproof shoes or carry snow gaiters to keep your feet dry.
2. Comfortable Clothing Layer System
Instead of wearing one heavy jacket, carry layered clothing so you can adjust according to the temperature.
Base Layer: Dry-fit T-shirts or thermals.
Mid Layer: Light fleece or sweater.
Outer Layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket.
3. Winter Trek Essentials (If Visiting in Snow Season)
If you are planning the trek in December to February, you will need:
Snow trekking shoes or your normal trekking shoes with anti-slip crampons / traction chains.
Trekking poles for stability on snow.
Warm gloves, woollen cap, and neck warmer.
Snow gaiters to keep snow out of your shoes.
4. Rain Protection (For Monsoon or Uncertain Weather)
Carry a rain poncho or waterproof jacket.
Keep your electronics in waterproof pouches.
5. Personal Items
Water bottle (reusable, avoid plastic disposables).
Sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun is stronger at high altitude).
Lip balm and moisturizer (to avoid dryness).
Small first-aid kit (with basic medicines and band-aids).
6. Trekking Gear (Optional but Helpful)
Trekking poles (reduce strain on knees).
Head torch (especially useful in camps or during early morning summit starts).
Small backpack for daily use (if you have a bigger bag in the car/camp).
Pro Tip: If you are visiting in winter, inform us in advance — we can arrange proper snow trekking equipment for you or guide you on renting it at Chopta.
Best Time to Visit the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila Trek
One of the best things about the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek is that you can do it throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons:
March to May (Spring/Summer) – The forests fill with blooming rhododendrons, the meadows of Chopta turn lush green, and the days are pleasant (10°C–20°C). Perfect for those who enjoy flowers, greenery, and comfortable walking.
June to September (Monsoon) – The trail becomes fresh, green, and misty. Light rain adds charm to the views, but paths may be slippery. Ideal for nature lovers who don’t mind getting a little wet.
October to November (Autumn) – Clear blue skies, crisp air, and the sharpest Himalayan views. One of the best times for photographers and people who want crystal-clear panoramas.
December to February (Winter) – Snow blankets the meadows, and the peaks look magical. The Tungnath and Chandrashila routes may require warm clothing and snow gear, but the winter scenery is unforgettable.
Important for Temple Visitors:
If visiting Tungnath Temple is your priority, plan your trek between April and October. This is when the temple doors (Kapats) remain open for devotees. In winter (November to April), the idol is moved to Makku Math Temple in Makku Village for worship.
Our Tip:
For snow lovers – January & February
For flowers and greenery – April & May
For best visibility – October & early November

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek suitable for beginners?
Yes — the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek is beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone with average fitness.
The trek is done in two main sections:
Sari Village to Deoria Tal – About 3.5 km, with a well-laid trail that includes gradual climbs and some stone steps. Most beginners can complete it in 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace.
Chopta to Tungnath Temple – Around 3.5 km, on a paved stone trail with a steady ascent.
Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak – About 1–1.5 km more, with a steeper climb, but the stunning 360° Himalayan view makes it worth the effort.
Overall, it is considered an easy to moderate trek. The difficulty mainly depends on your fitness level, the weather, and how much weight you carry.
Winter Note:
From December to February, heavy snow can make the Tungnath–Chandrashila stretch more challenging. In such conditions, we recommend:
Wearing proper winter trekking shoes
Carrying trekking poles for balance
Hiring a local guide for safety, especially in icy patches
Tip for Beginners:
Start slow, keep a steady pace, take short breaks, and stay hydrated. Even if it’s your first Himalayan trek, this route is very doable with basic preparation.
2. How many days are needed for this trip?
Most travellers prefer our 4-day Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek package, which starts and ends in Delhi. This gives enough time to travel comfortably, enjoy each location without rushing, and explore key attractions like Maa Dhari Devi Temple, Devprayag Sangam, and Omkareshwar Temple along the way.
However, we understand that everyone’s travel style is different — so we offer multiple itinerary options:
3-Day Package – Best for travellers short on time, usually starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh or Delhi or Dehradun. This covers the main trek but with tighter travel schedules.
4-Day Package – Our most popular option, starting from Delhi. Ideal for a balanced mix of travel, trekking, and sightseeing.
5-Day Package – Perfect for those who want a slower pace, extra sightseeing stops, or more time to enjoy Chopta Valley and Sari Village.
Tip: If you’re travelling from outside North India, we suggest the 4-day package for a well-rounded experience. If you want a relaxed holiday with more time in the mountains, go for the 5-day package.
3. What is the altitude of Chandrashila Peak?
Approx. 3,690 meters above sea level.
4. Can this trek be done in winter?
Yes, the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek is absolutely doable in winter — in fact, many adventure lovers and photography enthusiasts prefer it in this season for the magical snow-covered landscapes, crystal-clear skies, and peaceful trails.
In winter, Deoria Tal looks like a frozen mirror reflecting the snowy peaks, and the climb to Tungnath–Chandrashila feels like walking through a white wonderland.
We operate weekly group departures in winter from Delhi, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun, and also arrange private tours if you want a more personal experience.
Important: Winter trekking requires the right clothing, proper footwear, and basic snow gear like gloves, gaiters, and sometimes microspikes. A local guide is highly recommended for safety, as trails may be slippery or covered with deep snow.
5. Do you offer both group and private tours?
Yes, we offer both group and private tours for the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek, and these are available throughout the year.
Group Tours: Perfect for solo travellers or small groups who want to join others. In winter, we focus more on fixed group departures from Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun so you can enjoy the trek with like-minded travellers and share costs.
Private Tours: Designed for couples, families, or friends who want a more personal experience with flexible dates and a pace that suits them.
6. Are meals included?
Yes, our Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek package includes morning and night meals for the entire trip. We make sure you get fresh, healthy, and tasty food to keep your energy up during the trek.
Whenever possible, we serve authentic Pahadi dishes prepared by locals — simple, home-style meals that give you a real taste of Uttarakhand. Alongside local flavors, we also include basic vegetarian meals like rice, dal, vegetables, chapati, and seasonal sides to suit all travellers.
If you have any special dietary needs (like Jain food, vegan meals, or avoiding certain ingredients), just inform us in advance, and we’ll try our best to arrange it.
7. Are washrooms available in camps?
Yes, our camps come with attached washrooms, but since these are in remote mountain locations, the facilities are basic compared to hotels or homestays.
In camps: You’ll have an attached toilet, but there is usually no permanent electricity connection — instead, we use solar lights at night. There’s also no geyser, so hot water is provided in buckets in the morning.
In winter: When heavy snow falls, water in pipes can freeze, so you may experience a bit of delay in water availability.
For travellers who enjoy staying close to nature and don’t mind basic amenities, camping is the perfect way to experience the forest and starlit skies. However, if you prefer more comfort, we also have hotel and homestay options with better facilities.
8. Is there network connectivity?
Yes, you’ll find good mobile network coverage in Sari village — all major operators like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea work well here with stable internet for calls, messages, and basic browsing.
However:
Chopta: Very limited network; calls might go through in some spots but internet is patchy.
Tungnath & Chandrashila trek: Very poor to no network connectivity in most areas.
Deoria Tal: Limited network; you may get signal at certain points, but it’s not reliable.
If you need to stay connected, it’s better to inform your family and finish important online work before leaving Sari village.
9. Do you arrange trekking gear?
Yes, we can arrange trekking gear like trekking poles, gaiters, snow boots, and crampons if you inform us at the time of booking.
You have two options:
1. We provide it directly as part of your package (at an additional cost if needed).
2. Rent locally from Chopta, where the trek starts — there are multiple rental shops.
In winter, especially during snow, proper gear is highly recommended for safety and comfort.
10. Can we join from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun instead of Delhi?
Absolutely! While our standard package starts from Delhi, we also arrange pickups from Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun.
This is a good option if you are already in Uttarakhand or want to shorten the journey. Pickup time will be adjusted according to your location.
11. Are your drivers experienced in mountain roads?
Yes — all our drivers are local Pahadi drivers born and brought up in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions.
They have years of mountain driving experience, know the routes well, and understand how to handle road conditions in all seasons — from monsoon rains to snowy winters.
Our vehicles are well-maintained, fully documented, and have all required permits. Your safety and comfort come first.
