Chopta Tungnath Trek Package – A Walk into the Sky

Introduction

The Chopta Tungnath Trek is not just a journey across meadows and mountain trails; it is a gentle conversation with the Himalayas. Imagine leaving behind the restless rhythm of Delhi and slowly entering a world where rivers whisper prayers, forests hum ancient songs, and temples stand like guardians of time. In Chopta, the air feels young, the meadows stretch endlessly, and Tungnath Temple waits high above, draped in silence and faith. Beyond it, Chandrashila Peak calls — a place where dawn paints the Himalayan giants in strokes of gold.

This trek is not about racing to a summit. It is about walking slowly, letting the earth steady your breath, feeling the bell at Tungnath vibrate in your chest, and watching the horizon widen at Chandrashila until you forget where the sky ends and where your heart begins.

The Chopta Tungnath Trek Package by Travelophila is your four-day story woven through Delhi, Haridwar, Chopta, Tungnath, Chandrashila, and Rishikesh — a story that blends devotion, adventure, and peace.

The Story in Four Days

Day 1: Delhi → Haridwar – The First Prayer

The wheels roll out of Delhi, and hours later Haridwar greets you with ghats full of life. Saints chant, diyas float, bells ring, and the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri turns the night into a sacred flame.

Day 2: Haridwar → Chopta – The Mountain Road

The road winds upward. At Devprayag, two rivers embrace to become the Ganga. At Maa Dhari Devi Temple, blessings linger in the wind. By evening, Chopta welcomes you with pine forests, soft meadows, and crisp mountain air.

Day 3: Chopta → Tungnath → Chandrashila → Chopta – The Climb of Faith

Step by step, you walk to Tungnath Temple (3,680m), the highest Shiva temple on earth. A little higher, at Chandrashila Peak (4000m), the Himalayas unfold in grandeur — Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath all gleaming under the sun.

Day 4: Chopta → Rishikesh → Delhi – The Farewell

On your way back, Rishikesh offers one last pause. The Ganga flows calmly, the bridges sway gently, and by evening Delhi calls you home with memories that feel eternal.

FAQs – Questions Travelers Whisper Before the Trek

1. Is the Chopta Tungnath trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, this trek is one of the most beginner-friendly Himalayan treks. The trail is about 4 km from Chopta to Tungnath and can be done slowly at your own pace. It does climb gradually, but the path is well-paved with stones. Even if it’s your first trek, with short breaks and steady walking, you can comfortably reach the temple and Chandrashila.

2. Can children join the trek?

Children above 8 years usually enjoy the trek, as the distance is short and not too steep. Younger kids can also come, but parents must carry warm clothes, snacks, and patience for extra breaks. In winter, if snow is present, kids often love it even more.

3. How difficult is the trek to Chandrashila Peak?

From Chopta to Tungnath it is a moderate climb, but the last stretch from Tungnath to Chandrashila is slightly steeper. However, it is short (about 1.5 km) and very rewarding. Most trekkers, including beginners, manage it with rest. The best way is to walk slowly, carry water, and avoid rushing.

4. What is so special about the sunrise at Chandrashila?

Chandrashila is one of those rare places where the first light of the sun touches the tallest Himalayan peaks before your eyes. As dawn breaks, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, and Trishul glow golden. Many say it feels less like watching the sun rise and more like witnessing a divine blessing.

5. Is there mobile network in Chopta?

Connectivity is very limited. Jio and BSNL sometimes catch weak signals, but Airtel and Vodafone often don’t work. Chopta is best experienced without depending on the phone — a natural digital detox. Carry a power bank, but expect to disconnect.

6. What about washrooms and facilities during the trek?

At Chopta camps or homestays, you will find basic washrooms — some western, some Indian style. On the trekking route to Tungnath and Chandrashila, there are no washrooms, so you must manage naturally. Carry tissues and eco-friendly wipes.

7. How cold does Chopta get?

Chopta stays cool year-round. In summer (April–June), the days are pleasant at 15–20°C, but nights drop to 8–10°C. In winter (December–February), days hover around 5–10°C, and nights often fall below zero (-3 to -5°C). Warm clothes are always necessary.

8. Will I see snow on this trek?

Yes, if you go between late December and March, the Chopta-Tungnath trail usually gets snow. Trekking in snow is magical, though a bit more tiring. In spring and autumn, there is no snow but meadows bloom with flowers or glow with golden leaves.

9. What kind of shoes are required?

Sturdy trekking shoes with a good grip are important. Sports shoes are not reliable, especially on snow. Waterproof trekking shoes are recommended in winter. Also carry a pair of warm socks.

10. Is Tungnath Temple open all year?

No. Tungnath Temple remains open from April/May to November. In winter, the idol of Lord Shiva is shifted to Ukhimath, where devotees can still offer prayers. But the trek remains open year-round.

11. How long does it take to trek from Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila?

From Chopta to Tungnath, it usually takes 3–4 hours depending on pace. From Tungnath to Chandrashila, it’s about another 45 minutes to 1 hour. Returning downhill is quicker, often half the time.

12. Do I need oxygen cylinders for this trek?

No. The altitude (up to ~4000m at Chandrashila) is not extreme. Most trekkers breathe comfortably with short rests. Oxygen cylinders are not required unless you have a medical condition.

13. Are there shops or tea stalls on the way?

Yes, in the trekking season there are small stalls selling tea, Maggi, pakoras, and biscuits. These are simple but comforting, especially when enjoyed with mountain views. In winter, many stalls close due to snow.

14. Can senior citizens join this trek?

Yes, many senior citizens have done this trek, especially up to Tungnath. The key is to walk slowly, take breaks, and perhaps use a pony if required. Chandrashila may be more challenging but still doable with determination.

15. What should I pack for the trek?

Carry layered warm clothes (light jacket, woolens, windcheater), trekking shoes, torch, power bank, reusable water bottle, cap, sunscreen, personal medicines, and light snacks. In winter, add gloves, muffler, and thermals.

16. Why is Tungnath Temple so special?

It is the highest Shiva temple in the world and part of the Panch Kedar temples. Legend says the Pandavas built it to atone for the Kurukshetra war. Its location, high above the clouds, makes the devotion even more powerful.

17. Will I get electricity in Chopta?

Electricity is limited. Some camps and homestays have solar power, but it is best to carry a power bank. Night skies here are so beautiful that you won’t miss screens.

18. Is camping safe in Chopta?

Yes, camping is very safe. Camps are run by locals, meals are warm and homely, and the silence of the meadow at night is unforgettable.

19. What kind of food is available?

Expect simple, delicious food: dal, rice, roti, vegetables, parathas, Maggi, tea, and sometimes pakoras. Don’t expect luxury dining, but meals are fresh and homely.

20. Why do people call Chopta the “Mini Switzerland of India”?

Because the rolling alpine meadows, snow-clad peaks in the background, and fresh pine forests give Chopta a charm very similar to Switzerland — but with the soul of Uttarakhand.
