The Story Behind Gangotri
Gangotri is deeply connected with one of the most important legends in Hindu mythology.
According to ancient scriptures, King Sagara performed the Ashwamedha Yajna. During the ritual, his sixty thousand sons were reduced to ashes by Sage Kapila due to their arrogance. Their souls could only attain salvation if the holy River Ganga descended from heaven and touched the earth.
Many generations later, King Bhagiratha performed years of intense penance to please Goddess Ganga. Moved by his devotion, she agreed to descend to Earth. However, her powerful flow was capable of destroying the entire world.
Lord Shiva then received the mighty river in his matted locks, gently releasing her onto the earth. From that moment, the sacred river began her journey through the Himalayas, blessing humanity with life and spiritual purification.
The river flowing beside Gangotri is therefore known as the Bhagirathi, named after King Bhagiratha, whose determination brought the Ganga to Earth.
Gangotri Temple
The present temple is believed to have been built during the early 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and has been renovated several times over the years.
The white granite temple stands beside the Bhagirathi River, creating a peaceful setting surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Despite its relatively simple architecture, the temple holds immense religious importance because of its association with the descent of Goddess Ganga.

Gaumukh – The Source of the Ganga
Although Gangotri Temple is the main pilgrimage centre, the physical source of the Bhagirathi River is located at Gaumukh Glacier, around 18 kilometres from Gangotri.
The trek passes through spectacular Himalayan landscapes, glaciers and alpine valleys, making it one of the most rewarding treks in Uttarakhand.
Many trekkers continue further towards Tapovan, which offers breathtaking views of the majestic Shivling Peak.

The temple opens after winter, and the weather remains pleasant for pilgrimage and sightseeing.
July to August
The surrounding valleys become lush and green, but occasional heavy rainfall may affect road conditions.
September to October
One of the best times to visit Gangotri. The skies remain crystal clear after the monsoon, mountain views become spectacular and the crowd is comparatively smaller.
Winter
Heavy snowfall leads to the closure of the temple. During winter, the idol of Goddess Ganga is shifted to Mukhba, where worship continues until the temple reopens.
