Tungnath – The World’s Highest Shiva Temple Above the Clouds
There are temples that impress with their architecture, and then there are temples that leave a lasting impression because of the journey to reach them. Tungnath Temple is one such sacred place. Standing at an altitude of about 3,680 metres (12,073 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Tungnath is recognised as the highest Shiva temple in the world and is one of the revered Panch Kedar temples.
Surrounded by alpine meadows, rhododendron forests and panoramic Himalayan peaks, Tungnath is a destination where spirituality and nature come together. Every year, pilgrims visit to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, while trekkers and nature lovers walk the same trail to experience the breathtaking Himalayan landscape. Just above the temple lies Chandrashila Summit, offering one of the finest 360-degree mountain views in Uttarakhand.
Unlike many Himalayan temples that require long and difficult journeys, Tungnath can be reached through a scenic trek of around 3.5 km from Chopta, making it suitable for beginners, families and first-time trekkers with basic fitness.
If you’re planning your journey, our Tungnath trek Package includes comfortable transportation, accommodation and guided assistance for visiting Tungnath and Chandrashila. Pilgrims who wish to combine this sacred temple with Uttarakhand’s most important shrines can also explore our Char Dham Yatra Package, which covers the state’s four holy dhams in one spiritual journey.

The Mythological Story of Tungnath
According to Hindu mythology, after the Mahabharata War, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the destruction caused during the battle.
Lord Shiva avoided meeting them and took the form of a bull. When the Pandavas recognised him, Shiva disappeared into the earth. Different parts of his divine body appeared at five locations across the Garhwal Himalayas, which later became known as the Panch Kedar temples.
At Tungnath, it is believed that the arms (bahu) of Lord Shiva appeared, making this temple one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Architecture of Tungnath Temple
Despite its high-altitude location, Tungnath Temple has stood strong for centuries.
Built entirely from stone, the temple reflects traditional Himalayan architecture with beautifully carved walls and a peaceful atmosphere. During winter, heavy snowfall covers the temple, and the idol of Lord Tungnath is ceremonially moved to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where worship continues until the temple reopens in summer.
